The Value of an OPR

Carl Lawson, Hanson Professional Services

This session by Jay Enck and Carl Lawson will cover the benefits of writing good Owner’s Project Requirements and how to get by without them. Commissioning agents and architects often have opposing views on the value of the OPR. Enck will discuss how the OPR differs from the Architectural Program and clarify how it fits into the design, construction, operation and commissioning process. Session attendees will learn techniques for collecting information for development of the OPR, the commissioning purpose behind it, and how a commissioning agent would use the OPR.

Carl Lawson will discuss common concerns commissioning agents face when beginning a commissioning project after the building is 50 percent complete. Problems frequently include not having either an OPR or a basis of design; contractors unwilling to work with the commissioning agent; owners not understanding the process; and the construction manager not wanting his or her schedule compromised. In this session Lawson will speak to these common concerns and offer creative solutions for dealing with them and working with various parties in the process.
