Optimizing the Existing Building Cx Process

David E. Claridge, Texas A&M University
Lia Webster, PE, PECI

David Claridge and Lia Webster will take a look at how to get the most out of the typical process of existing building commissioning. Claridge will address how a provider/owner can maximize the benefits of EBCx by being open to additional opportunities that arise throughout the process but were not part of the initial investigation findings. Substantial EBCx savings can result from measures not identified in the initial assessment. His presentation will demonstrate that selecting EBCx measures for implementation based on the results of an initial assessment can reduce EBCx effectiveness. Webster will address the challenges around EBCx timing, sequencing, integrating studies, processes, approach and guidelines. She’ll delve into the Federal Energy Management Program’s work to develop guidelines for integrating EBCx in performance contracting and how this is helping determine a process that will maximize the benefits of EBCx when integrated with retrofits in the Energy Savings Performance Contract world. Webster will talk broadly about integration issues and discuss whether the guidelines are working out.
