Existing Building Cx for Energy Savings – Parts I & II

Dave Moser, PE, PECI
Len Beyea, RetroCom Energy Strategies
Ryan Stroupe, Pacific Energy Center – PG&E
Celeste Cizik, PE, EMC Engineers, Inc.

Achieving relatively low-cost energy savings (compared to capital-intensive retrofits) is often a primary goal of building owners who choose to implement commissioning measures in their existing buildings. Therefore, in the current market, a growing percentage of existing building commissioning projects are prioritizing measures related to energy savings, focusing on optimizing the operations of energy-using mechanical equipment, lighting, and related controls. In this two-part session, a panel of experienced commissioning practitioners will discuss energy-focused EBCx approaches that achieve building owner goals without sacrificing the core principles or intent of the commissioning process.

Dave Moser will present an overview of energy-focused EBCx, and will highlight many of the publicly and commercially available tools that can be used to streamline the process. Len Beyea will describe how to spot common opportunities for improved energy efficiency and will highlight case study examples of energy savings. Approaches to data acquisition and analysis will be presented by Ryan Stroupe, with particular focus on the capabilities of the Universal Translator to manage and analyze data from loggers and trends from building management systems. Celeste Cizik will conclude the session with tips and tricks for estimating energy savings.
