In case you didn’t hear, Monday, April 22 was Earth Day. To celebrate, many organizations held an event such as a 5k run, a fair or organized a day of service. At PECI, we love sustainability so much that we decided to go bigger and stretch Earth Day into Earth Week. From a sustainable potluck to making reusable notebooks to a plug load contest, there was something for everyone and the week was a huge success. Here’s a quick summary of what we offered: ...

At PECI, we are busy saving the world one kWh and/or Dth at a time but we still find time to share our opinions and insights on our favorite topics: energy resources, sustainability, energy efficiency, green practices and all things PECI. We invite you to join the conversation.
You know what a resolution is. It's something millions of people make in anticipation of the New Year. According to USA.gov, nearly half of the most popular New Year’s resolutions revolve around health in some way, whether it’s to drink less, eat healthier, reduce stress, exercise more or lose weight.
Because health seems to be a common motivator for people in their resolutions, our Green Team’s education committee has decided to focus on healthy and sustainable eating during the first quarter of the...
Last month I wrote about day-to-day practices that make our Portland Headquarters a sustainable place to work. In addition to these general benefits, we also offer many activities and competitions to engage our employees to make sure we are talking the talk and walking the walk when it comes to being a sustainable company.
Waste Audit
Twice a year our Green Team conducts a waste audit that gives us a snapshot of how much garbage we generate on a daily basis. We don gloves and sort...
Here at PECI we want our actions to speak for us, and so we work hard at living our mission every day. As part of this mission, we’re benchmarking our sustainable and socially responsible practices as we develop our first Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) report. In the meantime, I’d like to highlight some of the day-to-day practices in our Portland Headquarters that I believe make PECI such a great company to work for.
- Composting – Receptacles are located on each of our three floors for composting anything from lunch scraps to paper towels and pizza...
I am going to come out and state the obvious: the weather in Portland had been really hot the last few weeks. With highs of 100 and lows that are, well, not much lower, I am sure you are looking for ways to keep you and your home cool without causing your energy bills to skyrocket. I know I am!
Last weekend I had the opportunity to staff Energy Trust of Oregon's table at the Alberta Street Fair. Our goal was to sign fair-goers up for home energy reviews, hand out high efficiency shower heads and educate customers about Energy Trust products and programs. One of the challenges of...
I recently coordinated a discussion group sponsored by our Green Team called "Voluntary Simplicity." It was facilitated by the Northwest Earth Institute and focused on living a purposeful life, instead of one where we simply go through the motions and are controlled by personal and cultural expectations.
When I chose this particular course, I thought the main focus would be about living with fewer material possessions and the benefits of living lightly on...

Earlier this year, I joined several other members of PECI’s Green Team for the annual waste audit. We donned gloves and sorted through the collected two days’ worth of trash from our Portland office kitchen, community garbage cans and recycling stations. We weighed the recycling collectively but sorted all of the trash into the following categories: paper, plastic/metal, plastic bags, compost, coffee cups, "To Go" cups, and containers and garbage (things that can’t be...
Last weekend I volunteered at Portland’s Better Living Show at the Portland Expo Center. As a member of the Energy Trust of Oregon’s New Homes and Products Team, I had the opportunity to spend a few hours volunteering at Energy Trust’s “Good Energy Pavilion,” talking to customers and answering questions they had related to refrigerator recycling, energy-efficient lighting options and Energy Trust products incentives.
These events are fun for me because I mostly work “behind the scenes”...
A few months ago I was asked to participate in an activity for a work training. The activity was calculating my ecological footprint on the Global Food Network website. I found the results to be really interesting, and I've been thinking about them ever since.
The activity asks for details based on your consumption and daily habits, such as how much meat and dairy you eat, how far you drive your car, what kind of...
It seems like you can do just about anything with a smartphone these days. You can call, text, listen to music, purchase music, use it as an address book, Internet provider, game console, e-reader, and GPS, just to name a few. And thanks to the development of some really great apps, you can also use it to "go green."
This post is all about the "green apps" I use: from finding in-season, local food, to figuring out what seafood is the most sustainable, to what products are best for the environment (and our health). I've provided you with a list of my favorite iPhone apps. For all of...
The other day I ran out of moisturizer. I was expecting it, so when I couldn't coax the last dollop of cream out of the bottle, I grabbed another one and went to toss the empty bottle in the recycling bin. That's when I saw the dreaded number "5" on the back, indicating that it couldn't be recycled in our curbside recycling bin, and had to be tossed in the trash instead. I don't know about you, but I hate creating garbage. And I felt bad about throwing the bottle away, because I knew that as soon as I ran out of moisturizer or any of the other plastic encased products in my bathroom...
I recently came across two articles that prove why I am proud to be an Oregonian. The first was a story in Sustainable Business Oregon’s e-newsletter that announced per capita car registration in Oregon has dipped 5 percent in the last three years. I have a feeling that’s, at least in part, because the...
I don’t know about you, but every year I make a New Year’s resolution only to break it a few months later. I have a feeling the reason is because I always set the bar too high. You know ─ work out every day, avoid eating sugar, or go to bed by 10 pm every night.
This year I made a resolution that I hope is more, well, sustainable; get rid of plastic bags.

I recently participated in a discussion group sponsored by PECI's Green Team, titled “Menu for the Future.” It was facilitated by the Northwest Earth Institute (NWEI)and its focus was identifying the effects our food system has on the environment while also considering economic and social impacts.
For many people consuming food is a relatively passive action, meaning they don’t take time to consider its source, or how the food traveled to their plates. But for...
As I write this post, I have been an employee at PECI for 3 months, 1 week, 3 days and approximately 5 hours. And I love it.
My background in marketing started with a job as project manager at a small marketing agency in McMinnville, Oregon, where I worked for about three years. I enjoyed the work and valued the experience, but the work I was doing just didn’t speak to me. So when my husband and I moved to Portland so he could pursue his dream career, I decided I would do the same.
I have always been what you might call “eco-conscious.” I grew up in a family where recycling...
