Guides
PECI’s tools get used. Our guides, protocols, and commissioning resources are widely used by builders, owners, operators, utilities and commissioning providers. Our easy-to-use guides and tools provide clear and practical information on building equipment, systems and overall performance improvements.

CCC Commissioning Guide: New and Existing Buildings
Two guides were produced in 2006 for the California Commissioning Collaborative (CCC). Written for building owners, managers, and operators, these guides answer the following questions:

  • What is Cx/RCx and what can it do for my facility?
  • What are the costs and benefits?
  • What happens during a commissioning or retrocommissioning process?
  • Who needs to be involved in the project? How do I build a successful team?
  • How do I ensure that the benefits are long lasting and that operations at my facility are efficient over the long-term?
  • How do I get started?

Control System Design Guide and Functional Testing Guide
These comprehensive guides were developed by PECI for the US Department of Energy and the California Energy Commission under partnership with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

  • The Functional Testing Guide: Fundamentals to the Field (FT Guide) is a practical tool for designers and commissioning providers to help ensure efficiency and performance. It includes test guidance and sample tests for air handlers, chillers, boilers, condensers, and pumping systems, as well as advice on how to achieve integrated operation.
  • The Functional Testing Guide: Checklist Tool and Test Directory provides an abbreviated list of test goals and cautions for 17 various systems and system components covered in the FT Guide, as well as links to relevant sections of the Guide. It also provides quick access to 95 publicly available prefunctional checklists, functional test procedures, and test guidance documents.
  • The Control System Design Guide provides methods and recommendations for the control system design process and control point selection and installation, and also includes a toolbox of templates for improving control system design and specification.

These three guides are part of the Functional Testing Guide

Retrocommissioning Guide for Building Owners
PECI developed this guide for the US EPA in 2007 in support of the ENERGY STAR Challenge, a national call to action to improve the energy efficiency of America’s buildings by 10 percent or more. This guide was created to address the opportunities that owners have to significantly increase the benefits of retrocommissioning in their buildings. As the retrocommissioning team moves through each phase of the process, the individual charged with leading the effort on the owner’s side can use this guide as a reference to gain a better understanding of each phase, and to lead the team in taking the appropriate steps to ensure success.

Operations & Maintenance Best Practices Series
PECI researched and developed several user-friendly guidebooks for the US EPA Atmospheric Pollution Prevention Division to help facility managers and operators improve building O&M practices. Though developed in 1997 and 1999, these guides continue to be viewed as the models of best practices, and remain the most-valued resources regarding this important topic. The series includes:

  • 15 Best Practices
  • Energy Management Systems: A Practical Guide
  • Operation and Maintenance Service Contracts
  • Portable Data Loggers: Diagnostic Monitoring for Energy-Efficient Operation
  • O&M Assessment
  • Putting the “O” Back in O&M
