California Public Utilities: EnergySmart Grocer Program
PECI designed and implemented the EnergySmart Grocer (ESG) Program from 2002 – 2005 to help grocers save money with energy-efficient equipment. The Program provided grocers with energy audits and information about efficient technologies, operations, and maintenance that illuminated the possibilities and impacts of increasing efficiency in their stores. By helping grocers understand the financial benefits of installing energy-efficient equipment as well as providing technical assistance, the Program enabled grocers to make sound business decisions about energy efficiency. It also assisted grocers in making subsequent investments in energy-efficient equipment by providing incentives to reduce up-front costs, and highlighted the advantages of energy-efficient lighting, HVAC, and refrigeration systems.
The success of the EnergySmart Grocer Program was a result of PECI’s ability to address market barriers, to invest in relationships with equipment manufacturers and contractors, and to develop tools that streamline the process of providing audits, bids, retrofit installations, and incentives. From January 2004 through August 2005, EnergySmart Grocer delivered more than 385 million lifetime KWh; this represents one of the largest energy savings delivered by any California Public Utilities Commission non-IOU program.
